On the night of June 12 we went to dinner at the Best Western Hotel in Oldenburg in a strange restaurant called the Heidekate or the Rastide. We were the only customers there for a couple of hours. It was as quiet as a tomb. You could hear a pin drop. And it was dark, too. They tried to make it seem as if you were in a basement when you weren’t by having fake window wells —- windows high up on the walls that didn’t let in much illumination. Only a single candle burned in the middle of the table in the darkness that seemed inhabited by invisible vampires instead of people. as a solitary waitress fluttered by from time to time saying little and not lingering. All the food seemed strange and foreign, the tastes even more so, and we couldn’t read anything on the menu. The waitress couldn’t help us. We ordered the cheese plate for dessert thinking that was safe. It was accompanied by delicious pumpernickel bread which we have decided to bake ourselves using a Westphalian recipe. But nothing and no one could be safe here. If by tomorrow morning we’re changed into ghouls I’ll try to post it to Facebook and Trip Advisor, too.
