The third pit stop of our car trip one year ago today on the ground in Germany was at the Varusschlacht Battlefield Center just outside of Osnabruck.
We got there in time for lunch on the outdoor patio at Gasthaus and Biergarten Varusschlacht Bransche/Kalkriese It took forever, but we were there for two hours all told. The waitress didn’t speak English at all, so it was hard to communicate that we didn’t like the mineral water and wanted Coke instead with our chef’s salads. It started to rain before we could get the bill. My husband put his umbrella up and went inside to pay. My son and I made our way to the gift shop. My husband joined us in a few minutes. As it poured at the restaurant we bought a book and a number of postcards and magnets. The Bear got a Roman coin replica. We expected the museum to be attached to the same building. They told us it was in the observation tower instead
Still only a stone’s throw from the outdoor restaurant, we walked out the back of the building and were rewarded by seeing reproduction Roman legion standards on poles. I took photos of my husband and my son standing beside them. The view was better than the lunch but the location could not be beat.
